Happy New Year

Today we went to Muriwai with Danae, MacKenzie, Saskia and Devon.  We had a picnic of fresh ham sandwiches (thanks to MacKenzie's boss for the Christmas bonus ham) on the cliffs overlooking the amazing Tasman Sea.  The huge waves were crashing into shore, the gannets were flying everywhere, the sky was bluer than the bluest blue on HDTV, and the wind was blowing just enough to let you know why the gannets call this place home.  What a glorious day!  After lunch we went over to the viewpoint and watched the gannets with rapt attention.  They're fascinating!  Some were hunting for food, some were doing some funky mating ritual, some were feeding and caring for their young, some were just hanging out.  When we decided we really should carry on so that we could see the cave while the tide was still out, we pried ourselves away from the amazing nature show and headed down the hillside to the beach and the caves under the gannets' cliffside nests.  This picture was taken from the beach looking up the side of the cliff as the birds left their nests and headed out to sea.
