still on the tour - driving down 90 mile beach

After surfing the dunes we turned out of the creek and began to drive down the 90 mile beach on the west coast of New Zealand along the Tasman Sea. It was spectacular to say the least! We stopped a couple of times. Once was to take pictures of a large bird that was resting on the beach. He wasn't hurt, apparently he has such an enormous wing span that he needs strong winds to help him lift off. He has probably flown hundreds of miles and was resting. In a few days he'd be rested enough to take off again if he gets strong enough winds. Very cool.

Any idea what kind of bird it was? Was it an albatross? It's amazing that you got so close - it must have been very tired.
