soggy saturday spurs spontaneity

We woke up Saturday morning to a deluge of rain! But we carried on with our plans to go to Rotorua for zorbing and luging (both outdoor activities). However, about an hour down the water-ridden highway, with our wipers flapping back and forth a million miles an hour, we decided it was time for a change in plans!

So we carried on to Cambridge where Capernwray is and met the daughter of my brother's long lost high school buddy! Small world, eh?! I met this girl's aunt on facebook (I had taught her Sunday school decades ago) and she said that her niece had just arrived here for school, so we thought we'd look her up. Pretty cool! We also said hi to our other two connections there, Brad and Verity. Here's a pic of all of us (minus Kenz who decided to finish her novel in the van, and me who, of course, is behind the camera :-) (Katherine, Bruce's friend's daughter is in the brown vest, Brad is the tall one in the back, and Verity is wearing the striped sweater)

So after a great visit and tour of the beautiful campus, we got back into the van and drove towards the ocean through the Coromandel forest/ mountain range. That turned out to be such a great adventure! We hadn't been that way, either, so it was all new to us too. We saw copious amounts of sheep in rain filled fields! As our day progressed the rain lightened up and we were able to stop for a roadside visit with some adorable baby lambs!!!! aaaahhhhhhh........... yah, we were all pretty enamoured with them! (great hubby/driver too, for stopping at our every whim - thanks Kevin)

The road was incredibly windy through the tropical forest so we had to stop a few times so no one lost their lunch in the back seat of the van! Here's a pic of Bruce and Niki in the Coromandel Range.

The end destination of our day ended up being the most incredible thing ever! The Hot Water Beach. There is a place here where the water under the sand is heated, boiled actually, by something....(we don't want to say the V word.... :-) It must be some thermal underground activity. We'll have to do some research. Anyway, you dig holes in the sand and as the water comes in/up it is so hot, that in some places you can't even stand in it. People were all over the beach in their little handmade hot tubs! It was so awesome! And the view of the ocean, of course, was spectacular!

So then we headed back home as it was getting dark and we were getting tired and hungry. What a great day we ended up having, even if it wasn't what we'd planned! My children say I'm more spontaneous since we've moved. lol.

I just felt so thankful for such a positive family. No one complained that our plans had to change or that we spent a very large portion of our 12 hour day in the vehicle. We just had a great time together as a family!

God is good!
