So yesterday was the Kelowna Cup for all the Division 1 teams. (there are 3 divisions in soccer here) Paige plays in the U16 league with players who are 15 and 16. Her team is made up of 15 year olds who play so well, they were placed in the Div.1 with all 16 year old teams. It has made for a great season of soccer! The past couple of years Paige's team has really dominated their league so it was great to see them have some competition and learn from losing this year.
Let me set the stage as far as weather goes first. It was pouring rain and freezing cold! Okay, well, cold for here.... :-0 Everyone is bundled up in their parkas (Danae hates that word - she says it sounds like something from the 70's, so I had to use it!), with blankets, mittens, umbrellas, hot coffee, etc. Every kid has at least 2 cheerleaders or more it seems, so the sidelines are full.
The first game was set for 11a.m. and didn't start until 11:30 because the team ahead of us had to go into overtime. When we finally left the field from our game it was 2:00! The 1st half ended 2-0 for the other team. We came back with 2 goals in the 2nd half and then they scored again and we tied it up right away. So we end the game 3-3. (2 45 min. halves) Now it's overtime. Two 15 minute halves, no break in between. They score, we score. Tied again. Now it is best of 5 shoot out. The players on the field are the ones who participate. Paige is on the field. She is nervous. She didn't want to be in a shoot out. The same thing happened at the June tournament and she scored, and they won. So now we are doing the same thing. We are tied 2-2, it's Paige's turn. She looks top right and shoots bottom left and scores!!! yay, the crowd goes wild....Paige is very happy! Then the other team scored and it is tied again..... So now we are into sudden death shoot outs....one to one.... We shoot and score, they shoot and miss! The team, the coach, every parent, friend, family member explode in cheering! Great way to win a game, lousy way to lose. But we are happy! happy to win and happy to be finding a warm restaurant with a clean bathroom! We are all freezing! haha
So back at 3 for the playoff game against our arch rivals....Lake Country. Awesome game. Scoreless through both halves. Goes into overtime again. First half of overtime no goals, second half we score not once, but twice to clinch the title of Kelowna Cup Champions beating out the older team! The girls were so happy, as were all of us!

(If you enlarge this pic, Paige has the red socks on. I didn't take many pics because it was so cold and I had to hold my umbrella! :-)
Gold medals were handed out along with yearly trophies chosen by the coach. (Paige won last year for most sportsmanlike). It was already dark when we left as you will see in the pictures below. It was crazy! There was no one else left anywhere on the 4 pitch soccer fields. We all went home to warm up!

Awesome day...sad Kevin had to miss it because of the Fire Chaplains conference. The team gave him a gift and a gold medal too, as he was the team's assistant coach.
Now indoor soccer starts next week! :-)
(The sports photographer from the Kelowna Daily Courier was there taking pics of the shoot out, so I am hoping there is one of Paige when he posts them on their website...I will let you know)
