How I pray for our kids

With Paige and Danae away at camp, I am inclined to pray for them just about whenever I think of them. It got me to thinking about how I pray for our kids and thought I would blog it…..

When I was pregnant with Paige and Danae, I remember thinking what kind of people do I want to raise? What values and characteristics do I want to see in our children as teenagers, young adults, and adults? I decided to choose three and base my praying for my kids on those 3 things.

The first thing I chose as the most important, was that our kids would grow up loving God with all their heart, soul, mind, body and strength. I figured if they had that as the foundation of their lives, it would ultimately direct all their actions and decisions.

The second thing I felt was important was that our kids should respect authority. I know that people who respect those in authority over them, teachers, employers, parents, etc., usually have a better experience in school, work, and life in general.

The last thing I hope for our children is that they will care for others. It’s a cruel world out there and I know that I was always taught to be kind to others. Simple things go a long way to showing care and kindness.

When the girls reached about 8 years old, I realized I needed to add another quality to my prayers for them - responsibility. Being responsible for themselves, their actions, their belongings, their activities, their schoolwork, etc.

I have added to my prayer list this summer, that our daughters would desire purity. Sexual immorality is rampant. We pray that our girls will have a strong inner desire to be pure, in their thoughts, actions, words and relationships and that they surround themselves with friends who have the same desire.

So, those are the 5 things I now pray for our kids. Love God, respect authority, care for others, be responsible, and desire purity.

There are other things that come up, such as making good choices in friendships, prayer for their future boyfriends/spouses, health, safety & protection, etc. but those 5 things are the keys that I have based my prayers on for our kids. I would love to hear how others pray for their kids…..if you care to share!

I have a daily prayer that I've prayed with each of the kids before they go to sleep, that is until they are too old..."God bless you and keep you, make his face to shine upon you and give you peace. May you grow in wisdom and stature and favor with God and humanity." Then we have popcorn thankyou prayers to personalize it. Other than this one, I don't have systematic prayers, just prayers in response to needs I see.
