Yesterday I was doing laundry (as a mom, when do we ever NOT do laundry) and I had a thought that I wonder if God could keep my laundry detergent from running out like He did the widow's oil in the Bible. I dumped the scoop of detergent into the machine, turned it on and walked into the kitchen. Kevin had just arrived home from visiting a senior who he visits weekly. On the odd occasion this man gives Kevin products that he helped invent. Well, Kevin walks in the house, no more than 1 minute after I'd dumped that scoop of detergent into the machine and had that fleeting thought/prayer, and hands me a box of laundry powder that his friend had given him. I love it! GOD IS FAITHFUL!!!!!
For those of you who know our circumstances and especially know me and my tendencies to worry about finances, you will understand how this one simple gift from God just boosted my faith. It was as if God was saying, I love you, I care about even the little things in your life. Don't worry, are you not worth more to me than the flowers in the field that I clothe so beautifully, how much more will I take care of you, my precious child?
Here is the story of the widow's oil from 2 Kings 4:1-7 for anyone who is not familiar with it.
The Widow’s Olive Oil
1 The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the LORD. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.” 2 Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?”“Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.”
3 Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. 4 Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.”
5 She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. 6 When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.”
But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing.
7 She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left
