new home, new traditions

Last night was so much fun! Making some new Christmas traditions in our new home of NZ.
We bought a turkey when they finally went on sale for the rock bottom price of $45 for a 5kg turkey! groan. Not the low price ($30), huge turkey(20lb+) we're used to! So what to do....who to have over to share our mini turkey??? We decided to let each of the girls invite 1 or 2 of their friends over and we'd celebrate our turkey with them seeing how most of them had never had a turkey dinner before. So last night we had 8 giggly teenagers at our house, having a great time eating turkey & drinking sparkling apple juice, opening Christmas crackers (a huge Kiwi favorite) & popping poppers.
Following the feast, they all made gingerbread houses. This is something that is definitely not common here. In fact, I had to make my own gingerbread house pieces! I figure I should have won 'mom of the year' for that one! (oh, I should start spelling 'mom' 'm-u-m' so as to fit into the culture here and not confuse all the children at my primary school!) So they laughed their way through making gingerbread houses covered in icing and candies! At the end, MacKenzie's house crumbled! We figured it was situated in Gisborne where the earthquake was this week.
What a fun evening! and what a mess! haha.....

I love the gingerbread making!! We used to do that as a family every year when I was growing up - baking and cutting our own panels and everything!! By the time we had finally been allowed to eat every candy off, the gingerbread was always hard and crunchy! :)
