that's twice in my life

Last night I was laying on Paige's bed reading....the TV was on in the other room....and I felt the bed shake. I thought that was pretty weird as I hadn't moved and no big trucks had driven by and the water outside the house wasn't turned on (the outside tap seems to shake the house!) I didn't give it much more thought. However, this morning when I was listening to the radio they talked about the earthquake that had happened at 9pm last night! I felt it!

The first time I felt an earthquake was about 12 years ago in our old house on Peachland Place. The kids were all in bed. Kevin was out at a meeting and I was sitting on the couch reading. The house shook, the dishes rattled and I was a tad freaked out! I called Bruce (there weren't cell phones in those days to reach Kevin) because I thought someone was in the house and I figured at least I'd be on the phone if someone happened to show up in the living room! He stayed on the phone with me as I checked out the house. The next day he called me to say that he had heard on the radio that an earthquake had occurred and that is what I had felt.

My mom and dad have a drawing from Danae at their place that has a little story in her grade one printing about waking up feeling an earthquake. Sure enough, she had felt an earthquake too.

And of course, my aunt and uncle have the ultimate earthquake story as they were in an LA hotel when the big earthquake hit LA in the late 80's (I think that's when it was). They said that was unbelievable and they thought the end had arrived for them as they braced themselves in the doorframes.

So anyway, that's my earthquake story.... I didn't even know we were on a fault here! I just thought there were old volcanoes around. Always something new to learn and experience!

I too have felt 2 earthquakes. Once I was in the living room and felt a shudder throughout the house and the swag lamp began to sway. Another was felt on a Good Friday morning where the house actually shook a bit and the shelves in the family room clattered about. It is indeed a weird feeling..can't imagine how scary a big one would be.

We wondered if you had felt the earthquake when we heard about it in the news. You guys are just getting the full-meal-deal of NZ experiences!! Don't talk about volcanoes anymore as some people back here may start worrying about the experiences still waiting for you!!! :D
